The International Gustav Mahler Society (IGMS) is announcing a

Young Scholars Award for Gustav Mahler Research.

The award aims to promote scholarly research on Gustav Mahler, his biography, his work, its reception and interpretation, his era, and his contemporaries from current perspectives and with up-to-date methods. In order to apply for the award, a scholarly text must be submitted. Studies can be submitted in the following form:

(1) An academic dissertation that has already been submitted to a university, has already been positively assessed, and was not submitted for assessment before January 15, 2023.

(2) An article of at least 50,000 characters that has been published or accepted for publication. The date of publication of the article must not be before January 15, 2023. If an article was accepted for publication before January 15, 2023, but was published only on this date or later, it may be submitted for the Young Scholars Award.

The prize money amounts to € 1,000. It is not possible to share the award. It is possible to publish as yet unpublished prize-winning dissertations in the Mahler Dimensions series, although receiving the award does not guarantee publication.

The study must be submitted exclusively by e-mail in the form of a single PDF file to the e-mail address office@remove-this.gustav-mahler.org. The deadline for submissions is May 15, 2025, 12 a.m. CET. Only studies submitted by the deadline will be considered for the Young Scholars Award. The winner will be announced by September 15, 2025. The International Gustav Mahler Society reserves the right not to award the prize.

Requirements for the submissions are:

  • compliance with the rules of good scientific practice
  • originality and innovation of the methodological approach
  • presentation, quality, and comprehensibility of the research results as well as their connectivity to and relevance for international Mahler research; fundamental expansion of the current state of research
  • overall impression of the study.

Further criteria:

  • possible languages of the submitted study: German, English.

The award is not given to active members of the IGMS Board or Advisory Board. The decision on the awarding of the Young Scholars Award is made by an award committee chaired by the IGMS president and consisting of two members of the IGMS Board or Advisory Board and two external Mahler experts.
