Contents and Form of Publication
With the book series Mahler Dimensions, established in 2024, the International Gustav Mahler Society and the Gustav Mahler Research Centre Toblach are presenting a new joint series of publications in which current research trends on Gustav Mahler, his work, its reception and interpretation, his era and his contemporaries are discussed. The series contains peer-reviewed publications (double-blind peer review), which are published digitally in open access and at the same time in a limited printed edition. The name New Library of the International Gustav Mahler Societyand the Gustav Mahler Research Centre Toblach follows on from the Bibliothek der Internationalen Gustav Mahler Gesellschaft, in which a total of six volumes were published by the International Gustav Mahler Society between 1978 and 2014 (with various publishers).
The contents of a volume within the series can be in German or English; mixed languages (German/English) are also possible for anthologies.
The Mahler Dimensions are based on the guidelines of open access according to the Berlin Declaration of March 22, 2003.
All digital contributions to the Mahler Dimensions series are published under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License (CC-BY) (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0).
Submitting a Manuscript
If you would like to publish a book as part of the series, please contact one of the two editors first. Thematically, scholarly contributions on Gustav Mahler, his work, its reception and interpretation, his era and his contemporaries are considered. Monographs by one or more authors as well as anthologies with several authors and responsible volume editors can be proposed. Volume editors work closely with the series editors but are solely responsible for the editorial work for the submitted volume in the event of publication. Dissertations and habilitation theses of outstanding quality can also be suggested for publication. The length of the submitted manuscript should not exceed 1,000,000 characters. At the time of submission, the manuscript must not be available for review by any other series or publisher and must not have been published in the submitted form before. Depending on the decision of the editors, however, revised or translated versions of already published texts might be accepted.
The manuscript must be submitted as a single, unprotected Word document (docx) in anonymized form, including a prefixed abstract in German and English (approx. 300 words each) with six keywords in German and English. A short biography of all participating editors and authors (approx. 200 words each) in German and English must be included in a separate Word document.
The editors, in consultation with the Research Board, decide on a possible inclusion of the proposed publication in the Mahler Dimensions series. After acceptance of the manuscript, the peer review process is initiated (double blind peer review by at least two independent experts, see 5.), which can take up to six months. After revising the entire manuscript and completing final editing, the publication will be published within six months. In order to finance the publication, authors or guest editors must generally contribute a subsidy for printing costs, the amount of which depends on the length of the manuscript and is communicated before the start of the peer review.
Preliminaries of a Publication
By publishing a text as part of the Mahler Dimensions, all authors of a volume declare their consent to the following procedures:
(1) At the time of submission, the submitted article must not be available for review by any other series or publisher and must not have been published in the submitted form.
(2) The submitted article may not be submitted to any other series or publisher for publication or review during the Mahler Dimensions review process, provided that this peer review process does not last longer than six months. Uploading the contribution to an Open Access repository (e.g. on a preprint server), however, is expressly permitted with reference to the submission to Mahler Dimensions. In this case, the editors request informal notification.
(3) If their contribution is included in the Mahler Dimensions, all included authors undertake to set up this contribution completely in accordance with the current formatting rules.
(4) A submitted article must comply with the international principles of good scientific practice, as summarized by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE). The text must not contain:
- deliberate misrepresentations, falsified or manipulated data or information;
- plagiarism or self-plagiarism (text recycling of one’s own texts or text fragments; quoted sections of text that have already been published – also in other languages – must be clearly marked as such);
- copyright violations.
(5) All included authors assure that, if necessary, they will obtain the rights to use text, image, audio, and video sources themselves. All sources available online must be provided with exact and correct hyperlinks (if possible with permalinks).
(6) After the editors and authors or volume editors have agreed on the publication of the contributions and a final version of the text, both sides undertake to initiate publication as soon as possible. After the contributions have been accepted by the editors of the Mahler Dimensions series and the Hollitzer publishing house, the authors guarantee the right to first publication. The editor and publisher only have the one-time, non-exclusive right to exploit the contributions. The authors retain all further exploitation rights over their contributions.
(7) If their contributions are included, the included authors agree to their open access publication under a CC-BY 4.0 International License.
Assessment and Publication
If the editor and Research Board classify a submitted manuscript as generally suitable for publication in the Mahler Dimensions, the peer review process will be initiated. Quality assurance is guaranteed by a double-blind peer review with independent reviewers. As a rule, the assessment takes a maximum of six months. The reviewers are selected by the series editors and the Research Board (unless the series editors or board members are themselves represented as volume editors or authors) and are required to follow the COPE Ethical Guidelines for Peer Reviewers.
The series editors decide on the publication of the submitted manuscript, taking into account the reviews obtained; the reviews are made available to the authors or volume editors in anonymous form. If the reviews recommend a revision of the article, the editors can request the authors or volume editors to make a corresponding revision. In this case, a final decision on the publication of the manuscript is only possible after a revised version of the text has been submitted. As a rule, the revised text version is no longer presented to the reviewers. Only the series editors decide on publication. Their decision is final.
If a publication proposal is accepted, authors or volume editors may be asked to make further corrections to the content and form and to arrange all texts in accordance with the current formatting rules. Before publication, the associated metadata must be updated. Each published contribution receives a DOI (Digital Object Identifier) and is registered in various indices (e.g. RILM, DOAJ, CrossRef, Google Scholar, etc.). Approximately six months after publication, the publication will be long-term archived in PDF/A format in the Phaidra repository at the University of Vienna.
