Gustav Mahler’s sound is unmistakable yet defies easy definition. The essays by international authors collected here present it as a multifaceted phenomenon that spans composition, performance, technical reproduction, and the listener’s reception. The volume emerged from the research project “Multiple Dimensions in Performances of Mahler's Symphonies” and the Toblach Symposium “Gustav Mahler's Sound: Between Compositional Process, Performance, and Reception.” It opens up new perspectives on the analysis, sources, history of interpretation, and mediatization of Mahler’s music. The book examines instrumentation, timbre, dynamics and tempo, as well as philological questions and immersive listening formats. The result is a multifaceted panorama of current Mahler research that sheds new light on the aesthetic fascination of Mahler’s sound and its enduring impact on musical perception, performance culture, and media history. This highlights the ongoing relevance of Mahler’s music today.
