Kalischt (Böhmen, heute Kalištĕ in Tschechien)

House No. 9: Mahler's birthplace. Mahler was born in this house (his father's inn and brandy distillery) on July 7, 1860, and spent the first three months of his life here.

Until the 1990's the house was still a village inn; in 1996 it was purchased by the village of Kalištĕ and restored by the "Musica noster amor" Foundation. It is now a music center with recital hall, and open to the public.

There are ten or twelve villages named Kalištĕ in the Czech Republic. Mahler's Birthplace is nine kilometers northwest of Humpolec, a small town about 22 km northwest of Jihlava.

Humpolec can be reached either directly from the freeway or over the country road Route 523 from Jihlava. The street in Humpolec which leads to Kalištĕ is called Nerudova. If you drive eastward on Na Kazámách street, there is a small sign "Rodný dum G. Mahlera", which indicates the left turn into Nerudova Street.

In Kalištĕ the Mahler House is one of the first buildings in the village. It is on the right side of the street, easy to find.
